Ali Çelebi

He was born in 1904 in Istanbul. He became a student of Hikmet Onat in the preparatory class at Sanayi-i Nefise, which he entered in 1918. Later, he moved to İbrahim Çallı workshop. In 1920, he left school and went to Germany and attended Grober's lectures at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He attended Hans Hoffman's workshop for a short time, then became a student of Kleve at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. He returned to Munich in 1923 and worked with Hofmann for four years. After returning to Turkey in 1927, he lectured at the teacher's college in Konya. In 1930 he went to Hofmann again for a year. He was appointed as a lecturer at the Istanbul Fine Arts Academy in 1931, but resigned after a few months. In 1934, he started to work as a designer at the Department of Archeology at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters. In 1938 he became a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Painting Department again. He taught in his own workshop until 1968, when he retired after assisting Leopold Levy and Feyhaman Duran until 1956. He died in Istanbul in 1993.
